Lilian Douglas
In the not too distant past we had a store of country knowledge. We could often predict the weather by observing the sights and sounds of Nature. We knew how to bake bread, spin and weave wool, knit, embroider and make lace. We knew how to shear sheep, catch fish, milk cows and churn butter. In short, we were largely self-sufficient in days gone by...except on the odd occasion when we needed divine help to exorcise faeries from the byre. Old days, old ways...

Geographically, Ireland is ancient. The land surface is older than that of most other European countries...and yet the Ireland of today is a young country, with one of the fastest growing economies in Europe. So why the change?

Although Ireland is still largely agricultural, the many changes brought about through our membership of the European Union has meant that instead of thinking only of ourselves as insular - a single unit living off the land, often in poverty and oppression - we now have all the benefits and advantages of a free global market.

But how can we, a small island nation lying west of the UK, hope to compete in a global market?

Through Information Technology...that's how!

Like it or loathe it, the Internet has arrived - and has had the biggest single impact on world trading and communication since the beginning of time. You need only look at any of the multi-nationals - the captains of industry - and yes, they do have a website. They do do business via e-commerce...and they make mega-bucks!

As opposed to the USA and other European countries, Irish and (to a lesser degree) UK businesses have been slow to capitalise on the wealth of business opportunities out there on the world wide web.

It may be that many people view the dot.coms with suspicion...and often justifiably so, particularly in light of the heavy losses suffered by some of those companies who simply saw the Internet as a means to overnight 'Get Rich Quick' philosophy.

Any successful business person knows well enough that overnight success is rare - the exception rather than the rule. They know that before any business can hope to become financially viable the key elements must involve extremely hard work, dedication, good support services and - above all - good customer support services, not to mention a good product or service to begin with.

Whether your business is big or small, you too can benefit from having an Internet presence.

Let Finn Valley Web Design®show you how you can develop a fast, efficient and user-friendly web presence to reach your target market - and at a fraction of the cost of conventional advertising.
