The Late Michael McMenamin 1942 - 1988
Michael McMenamin 1942 - 1988

Michael McMenamin, Navenny, Ballybofey, came originally from Glenfin Street. He was employed by the Donegal Vocational Education Committee in Raphoe, and was in later years transferred to Stranorlar. It was during this time in Stranorlar that Michael took a keen interest in the local Fire Brigade, and subsequently became a member in 1979.

He attended training courses in Sligo to become a qualified fire fighter and breathing apparatus wearer. Such was Michael's interest and enthusiasm for the Fire Service, that he assisted at the many training courses held in Stranorlar Fire Station down through the years. Michael was also instrumental in the promotion of the Fire Service in the Twin Towns and surrounding areas for the betterment of the community.

His warm personality, sense of humour, and willingness to help at all times gained Michael many admirers, and the respect of both the local community and the fire service at local and county level. Sadly, Michael died while returning from a fire call on 25th of November, 1988.

He was - and still is - an inspiration to us all.

The framed dedication (below) was penned by his fellow Firemen, and hangs with pride in the Station Office, Stranorlar.

A caretaker by day,
And a fireman too.
An exceptional man,
It could only be you.

To Michael who was fireman
And friend to us all,
No doubt we will meet again,
On our final call.

Fondly remembered by all your colleagues.
