The late Mr Seamus Neagle joined the fire service in 1947. Fortunately
he was interviewed about his time in the Fire Service, shortly before
his death. He said:
'William Thompson came to me one day in Geary's Yard, Navenny
Street, and asked would I join the Fire Brigade. I asked him what
I would have to do. He said "Can you climb a ladder?"
and I said that I could. "You're my man," he said, "Come
on!". If you could climb a ladder, then that was all they wanted.
There was no mention of medicals or money then'.
Seamus worked as a painter and decorator. Firemen at that time
were voluntarily giving of their time to provide an essential service
to their area.
