The Fire Station

Jack Gallagher recalls the local dispensary nicknamed the 'Green
Rooster', a transportable green tin shed that was used by Dr.
Gormley as a dispensary. When Dr.Gormley retired, Dr. Browne took
over. It was taken to the showfield and was the North Western Health
Board dispensary.

Dr. O'Brien was the doctor at the time, and with the building of
a new dispensary, the 'Green Rooster' became available. Jack said
that he negotiated a deal with Mrs McKane for £45 for a garden
behind Woodview Terrace and got the 'Green Rooster' transferred
to it. It was used as a hut for the Fire Service equipment, and
to house the trailer pump, thus becoming the first fire station.

In 1973, Donegal County Council built the then standard Fire Station/Area
Engineers Office in Stranorlar. The builder was Alec McNeill. In
1974 the first breathing apparatus sets were acquired. The firemen
said that their first training in the use of these 1200 litre negative
pressure sets was undertaken in Letterkenny by Second Fire Officers
Jack Lillis and Paddy McGettigan. Mr. Paddy Malone was Chief Fire
Officer at that time.
