LETTER FROM MARTIN QUILLE

7, SUSSEX AVE.,
NEWARK 3, N.J.

Dear Paddy,

Sorry for delay in acknowledging receipt of diary and papers which Colette gave me. Thanks, I appreciate that diary very much. I sent Clifford his copy, also paper to Mullally.

Enclosed is a copy of a letter which Timmy (R.I.P.) wrote me. Of course these things were commonplace at that time unfortunately, and I don't know if you have seen this before or not. (The original I mean), but what makes me feel very proud of him is that the letter, written as you can see only four hours before execution, was in a fine bold hand, not a tremor in a letter or word, all punctuations properly made, not a comma missed. Whenever I read it, and that is often, it always gives me a vivid and true picture of how a brave lad went to his death. Just the same as all the letters he wrote me. If your friend can use it, he's welcome.

Two days prior to the execution I had a letter from Dan Enright (R.I.P.) also from Charlie Daly (R.I.P.). However of course they knew nothing at that time.

Some day when I have more time, I'll tell you the story of the hot information, and what the doctor told me about Mick. Remind me. The truth is, we were literally dead of starvation.

After their capture, Charlie wrote me, and told me the reason that they did not put out a guard was that not a man was fit to stand on guard duty. They had travelled several miles over the mountains, and were dead on their feet and so took a chance, then no doubt some informer, there never was any lack of them in Ireland or never will, did his dirty work.
