All text, letters, etc. contained within our "Martyrs" section has been electronically reproduced from the original book "The Story Of The Drumboe Martyrs", obtained with grateful thanks from Donegal County Library, Letterkenny. Although the author's identity is unclear, we know that the book was first published in 1958 by McKinney and O'Callaghan, Main Street, Letterkenny. With James Quinn's introduction, he may indeed be the sole author.

In conclusion of the book, the author states:

This is by no means a complete History of the Drumboe Martyrs, but it may serve to keep alive the memory of four gallant soldiers. Without the help received from their relatives in Kerry and Derry, this short account would be impossible and we gratefully acknowledge their help and co-operation.

To the persons who helped in the composition of this book a special word of thanks is due, especially to our friends in Letterkenny who did all the necessary typing.

We at Finn Valley Online believe that this tragic chapter in our history should be widely publicised, in remembrance of all those who gave their lives willingly in the cause for Freedom and the fight against imperialism.

We want the outside world to learn something of those events, which are all too often brushed under the carpet nowadays.

Special Note

Although the four young soldiers remembered here were all devout Catholics, The Irish Free State owes it's existance equally to the non-Catholic Community - many of whom sacrificed life and limb in the struggle for freedom.

Coming mostly from privelaged, Protestant backgrounds, men like Isaac Butt, Charles Stewart Parnell, Robert and Thomas Emmet, Robert Erskine Childers, Henry Flood, James Caulfield, Roger Casement, Thomas Davis, Henry Joy McCracken, Thomas Russell, Samuel Neilson, Napper Tandy, Henry Grattan, John Mitchel, Wolfe Tone and Cathal Brugha...the list is endless. All of these great men could easily have ignored the plight of the poor, downtrodden Catholics.

THEY DID NOT...AND TO THEM AND THEIR CATHOLIC COMPATRIOTS, IRELAND AS A NATION OWES A HUGE DEBT OF GRATITUDE
