Castlefin Bridge

The powers that were must have taken heed of the Survey, because a bridge was built over the Finn, soon afterwards. Stone from the ruins of the nearby O'Donnell Castle were used in its construction. £47 was paid for repairs to it in 1774. Later, a strong bridge was built at the cost of £900.

Through the years, Castlefin Bridge ha been repaired and strengthened. But now in the late 1980's, it is unsuitable for the traffic using it daily. It is not wide enough for two large vehicles to pass. Every time I look out, there I a build-up of lorries, vans or tractors, trying to cross, leading to the inevitable frustration and loss of temper of drivers.

A few years ago, a car went into the Finn at the bridge, and tragically, four young people were drowned. Last week-end's local papers - (27th January 1989) reported that a plan is being considered to build a new bridge at the cost of £1,000,000.

Let's hope this is not just a rumour, and may come to pass in the foreseeable future! Jut like the bridge proposed in 1750, 'it would turn to great advantage for both town and country.'

Mary Agnes Elliott, 1989

NB: To date, the plan for a new bridge remains on the back burner!
