JAMES NAPPER TANDY
(1740 - 1803) United Irishman
Born Dublin

Started life as an ironmonger, later becoming a land agent and rent collector. Entered politics as a representative of the guild of merchants on the Common Council. Joined the Volunteers on their formation and the approaches to the Houses of Parliament when their independence was announced on 27 May 1782. His influence declined as the Volunteer movement weakened. In 1791 he helped Tone and Thomas Russell to found the Society of United Irishmen, and became the first secretary of the Dublin group.
